"Fates Drawn by Her" presents five original characters as tarot cards, using divination to explore identity, symbolism, and feminine agency. Each card reflects its character’s story through the visual language of tarot.

Created as part of a larger 30-page research project, "Fates Drawn by Her" examines the often overlooked history of women in fantasy. Particularly, their role in shaping tabletop roleplaying and the genre itself. Centered on the female gaze and lived experience, these designs reframe fantasy through a distinctly feminine lens.

DEVELOPMENT

While developing Fates Drawn by Her, I had the privilege of communicating with several women who helped shape the early days of TTRPG fantasy. As a child, I rarely saw reflections of myself in the spaces I loved, and discovering these women later felt like uncovering something that had always been missing. I felt such profound sadness in how their contributions are often overlooked, in how I had to search, piece by piece, to find their work and their stories; but that absence only deepened their impact on me. Being able to speak with them during this project felt both surreal and fulfilling, bridging the gap between who I was then and who I am becoming. In this project, I focused on emotional depth, narrative symbolism, and the female gaze within each character. Some of these characters have been with me for years, while others are much newer; some shaped through long campaigns, others through only a few months of play. Across all of them, the threads of my experiences as a woman are present, even subconsciously, influencing both their design and their stories.Presenting these deeply personal characters as tarot cards - each reflecting both traditional meanings and their internal struggles - became a deeply healing process. This project allowed me to move beyond using fantasy as pure escapism, instead treating it as a lens through which to explore identity, agency, and the kind of representation I once searched for.

The Withering Grove is a high fantasy game project I created in 2023.This project is placed in a fantasy forest world, following the protagonist – a sunflower nymph. Along with her I also designed the antagonist, a prior nymph taken over by the manifestation of rot; and a wildcard character, the naiad lady of the lake.

The Oni Heir Trilogy is an original reimagining of a familiar action-fantasy property, translating its core themes into a feudal Japanese–inspired dark fantasy setting drawing on yōkai folklore. It reframes the modern martial-arts ensemble into a mythic world of spirits, masks, and dynastic conflict.Developed as a three-part 2D animated film concept, the work explores character redesign, environmental storytelling, and narrative adaptation. Visual direction is inspired by the cinematic style and compositional language of Kizumonogatari, emphasizing dramatic lighting, stylized motion, and atmospheric tone. This project is a non-commercial, transformative work created for academic and portfolio purposes, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by The LEGO Group or the creators of Ninjago.

CHARACTERS

Development

"The Oni Heir Trilogy" adapts the “Sons of Garmadon” storyline into three animated films for an older audience. We wanted to focus on dark medieval fantasy as a genre, but specifically Japanese medieval fantasy - not European. The project was designed to feel mature despite the animated medium, which we took great care to experiment with. It was created in collaboration with Sebastian Sunga, Irulan Sands, and Natalie Frank.
This series takes place in Medieval Japan. While it is not one specific time period, it is rooted in the history and culture in Japan from 1185-1603 CE. Monsters or other species in the show are replaced with similar Yokai variants. The only drastic change is to the race of the ninja and other important characters. While the ninjas are Yōkai, the civilians and side characters are still humans, with the exception of certain cursed or otherwise unique individuals. One such is Harumi, whose affliction as a Futakuchi Onna (two-mouthed woman) is the result of a curse. This kind of curse is something that would be fairly common in this world, and it’s a logical way to represent the mystical nature of Yōkai and their connection to curses or unnatural powers. The majority of ninja being Yōkai instead of humans ties directly into their role as elemental masters. In the main series, the ninjas are (mostly) humans who wield elemental powers, but their powers are rooted in supernatural energy that is far beyond what normal humans can harness. In the context of medieval Japan, this supernatural energy could manifest more naturally as Yōkai, which are supernatural creatures deeply tied to the natural world, spiritual forces, and mystical energy aligning perfectly with the elemental abilities they wield. The shift from monsters in the original series to Yōkai allows for a more natural integration of Yōkai into the world while still maintaining the core spirit of Ninjago, where the elemental powers are central to the characters' identities.

FILMS

Film 1: The ninjas investigate the rise of the Sons of Garmadon, a dangerous cult. Lloyd falls in love with Harumi, who is disguised and later revealed to be the cult leader. Harumi betrays the ninjas, reviving Lord Garmadon from the dead. Lloyd’s power is taken by Garmadon, forcing retreatKey Moment: Lloyd’s heartbreak as Harumi’s betrayal leads to Garmadon’s return and the cult taking control of Ninjago. Setup for the conflict in Film 2.Film 2: Garmadon and Harumi rule Ninjago, pushing the ninja into hiding. Everyone but Lloyd and Nya briefly leave to the Dragon Realm, which is cut from the film and left open for a possible spinoff while we focus on the story in Ninjago. After a time jump the crew returns to Ninjago to confront the growing tyranny.Key Moment: The ninjas defeat Garmadon’s forces, and Harumi sacrifices herself/dies. Garmadon hints at an impending Oni invasion as he is defeated and jailed.Film 3: After Garmadon’s imprisonment, the Oni invade Ninjago. The ninja free Garmadon to help them fight and defeat the Onis. At the end of the film, the Sons of Garmadon feel betrayed by their master and join forces with the dark Lord Mogra. The end credit scene could be a cliffhanger when Harumi is revived by the Crystal King. This ending serves as a cliffhanger and interest check for after the trilogy; opening the door to an animated series continuing onward from the movies. This is similar to how Kizumonogatari is a prequel trilogy to the Monogatari anime.

Basiliros is a game project created by the studio Project Jam and lead by Phuong Le. Set in a universe that suddenly has other worlds collide with it via magic, we follow the protagonist Florian as they adventure through diverse environments, cultures and genres.I contribute as a character and creature designer creating Charys - the right-hand of the main antagonist - in both her human and Lindworm forms, along with the creature designs for the High Seas region.

"Bubby, Let's Go Home" is a project created by Labiba Zaman.

"Bubby is an imaginary friend that goes through trials of life through fantasy and her goal is to find a place to belong, a home. Bubby explores new places and makes new friends on her journey. In the end, home was the adventures she made along the way.""Bubby's Art Book" is a compilation of all of the artwork of the series. I worked directly with Ms. Zaman to illustrate the joy of Bubby even before you turn the first page.

Artist Statement

I am a queer, biracial visual development artist, dedicated to creating emotionally resonant, story-driven fantasy art that centers uniquely compelling female characters, marginalized voices, and authentic lived experiences. Through narrative illustration and character design, I create immersive fantasy worlds where complex female characters take the lead, exploring strength, vulnerability, and quiet perseverance. My work spans from vampires and fantastical realms to deeply human stories, always grounded in thoughtful representation and creative integrity.

I strive to elevate diverse perspectives (especially women and Black voices) through both my original creations and collaborative projects by using immersive worldbuilding, visual storytelling to convey character emotion, and lore to engage audiences and enrich the worlds I touch. My mission is to challenge traditional, male-dominated fantasy narratives and offer art that is both compelling and inclusive. My work blends creative integrity, passionate storytelling, and thoughtful representation to connect with audiences, inspire empathy, and bring deeply feminine and human whimsical worlds to life.
